And now it is only me
Yesterday I left We!, today I handled the last remains, and now I am free. Interesting feeling, and I do miss the car so very much...
This also puts me in the interesting position of being laptop-less. This is less comfortable than I thought it would be. I have a week or two before I can get my new laptop.
Following quite a few recommendations, I got a MacBook Pro 17". I'll report about it when I get it.
Current task, and the reason that I don't have much time, writing the book. It turns out to be much harder than expected. I can get 5 pages in an hour or two at one seating, or I can get two sentences in the same time period in the next (the reason that I am blogging now instead of slaving away at the manuscript).
Oh, and I changed the blog, can you spot what is different?

Are you going to use Leopard or you'll switch to Vista? Please don't tell me Vista... :P
I am going to try Leopard, see how it is on Unix land, get to grips with Mono, etc.
I think that the Windows machine will be 2008 Server, see how that goes.
So, are you completely solo now?
BTW, I am doing a presentation on mocking tomorrow and Rhino is the tool of choice. I will let u know how it goes.

On the last update of Pro C# (in final production phase) I did most of the editing on my chapters on a MacBook Pro. NeoOffice was great for support of the funky Word template that Wiley makes us use. Even supports the new file format. I also use VMWare Fusion for an XP virtual machine. I was doing bootcamp for a while, but found that I really didn't need it and the virtual machine was more the adequate. XP works a little bit better then Vista does in the virtual machine. New environment takes a little getting used to, but I have no regrets and there isn't anything that I can't do on the MacBook.
One other thing, I found that if you do a detailed outline of each chapter, put together as much of the sample code as you can before you start writing the chapter, you'll be much more efficient. The pages seem to fly out much faster, plus you don't write yourself into a corner.
I see you changed your tag line.
Interesting ... if loop ?
You replaced the blog tagline didn't you? It used to be 'Specialization is for insects'. An 'if loop' sounds like something from the daily WTF - I'm curious as to what you are referring to :)
Best of luck in the future, Oren.
I'm sure you won't have a problem when you next look for somewhere to work :)
Jay,
My main concern with MBP is the keyboard layout. Muscle memory can be a bitch if you fight against it
Paul,
You got it.

inventor of the if loop?
I recently made the same move. I quit my job, thursday is my last day and I got a macbook pro. My other machine is a windows 2008.
I'm stoked with the Mac OSX and run visual studio on a bootcamp partition through fusion. It works pretty good.
There are 2 things that make the switch not as smooth as it should be the first one is that there is little consistency with the shortcut keys.
And the second one is finder (explorer) sucks, it's the worst file browser I've seen, but you can replace it with PathFinder which does most of what I need and has subversion integration.
I use mac office 2008 for the manning templates because they contain vb script and have to run them in some compatibility mode.
Mono and monodevelop now run on Leopard which is a nice to have :)
I am submitting a patch to fix that bug with the if loop.. it only runs once, sometimes..
Man, I've been thinking about qutting my crappy job. But if it means I have to buy a MacBook, then I can't afford it! :-)
Hey! I'm quitting my job too on March. I'm joining Novell to work on Mono & Suse. You should do the same :)
haha we can't quit our job just yet because we can't afford the Macbook Pro nice indeed :)
if loop = endless speculations
if loop is for insects ;)
I liked the previous one better. It was more "universal".
Good luck!
I left my last JOB in 1992 and haven't looked back. Do the independent contractor gig and see if it's for you.
You're still a slave - just to the client instead of some boob boss, but it's much better.
Best of luck!

Kind of funny, but I too quit my job this week AND bought a MacBook Pro (only 15", just couldn't justify the extra $700). I'm probably going to do Leopard with Windows (Vista or Server '08) in VMware Fusion. Other than that, I'll try to use Mono w/ Rake (or maybe even Bake if I can get the hang of Boo) as my build tool.
Best of luck with your future Oren!
If you dig hard into F# (or haskell) I suspect you might find something in there that you like and which will change your mind in deep and unexpected ways.
