New keyboard
As I said, my old keyboard started to give me troubles, and eventually ended up as completely unusable. I went to Bug store and replaced the keyboard & mouse set with a new one. ( I got a 85% refund of the original price that I paid for the keyboard and mouse when I bought the new one. )
I highly recommend Bug to anyone in Israel, you may get better prices on the Internet, but the quality of service and the support is unmatched in my experiance.
My new keyboard and mouse are: Logitech DiNovo Cordless Media Bluetooth Desktop.
It's a very different build from my last keyboard, it's flat an non-split, so all my muscle memory training need to be done over again. The reviews in Amazon aren't really good, which surprised me, since I expect very good quality from Logitech.
The hardware design of set is very good and feel high quality (and for the price, it should!) I'm still having trouble adjusting to this, since I need to re-train the muscles about the key positions. The winning point for me was that it's very similar to my laptop's keyboard, so I don't have to develop to sets of muscle memories, one for the desktop and another for the laptop. I managed to use the keyboard during the boot sequace, which is good, but there are a few seconds after the XP Welcome Screen shows that the keyboard and mouse won't respond. I assume it has to do with the Blue Tooth connection or something. I like the split numeric pad, and expect to use its functions quite a bit. On the hardware side, I'm very pleased.
However: The software sucks, and there are no two ways about it. I run as non admin, and installed the software using RunAs functionality (standard practice that works 99.99999% of the time). The installer uses a non-standard UI which I find ugly and unneccecary and requires a reboot of the computer (after I got the keyboard and mouse working), not very nice thing to do. When I rebooted and logged to my user, I got a message about configuring my Blue Tooth devices, and then the keyboard and mouse stopped working. I waited half an hour, and seeing no other recourse, I rebooted the computer again (hard reboot). This time I logged in as Administrator, and I got the same message, but this time I got a response after a few moments. {It configured something that already worked, I've no idea why}. I then tried to use to supplied utility to configured the keyboard and mouse extra buttons. The utility crashed with the standard windows error message. I downloaded it from logitech site and installed it again, and got the same response. I'm going to try the newest version they have now, and email them about it. If I can't get it to work, I'm going to say goodbye to this set, no matter how well designed they look and feel.
From what I can tell, there seems to be compatability problem with WinXp Service Pack 2, which makes most of the problems even more annoying. I can't believe that logitech bypassed that important an upgrade. I'm currently installing the 2.22 version of the software,I'll post more when I reach a final conclustion.
