More Windows Server 2008 Discoveries
Okay, I am impressed. Really impressed. I installed a non-web-edition of Win 2008, and now everything works as it should.
I really like what Microsoft did here. Both in terms of the UI experience that you get, the guidance that they keep popping up (which is not annoying), the speed, and overall feeling.
What really made me happy was this. Now I can actually drill down and see what is going on so easily.
Something that certainly cheered me up was the file-copy test:
It started instantly, and it looks like we get information that is actually useful. Unlike... that other OS.

If I am not mistaken, I have all this at my vista ultimate machine as well.
On a cold boot of vista ultimate I am sitting at ~ 700 MB of used RAM how does server compare?
~317Mb, but that is with SQL Server installed

@Ayende
How much ram did you reserve for virtual machine?
@Chris
You probably have 2 gigs of ram, right?
Vista uses as much ram as it could, so 700 MB is normal for 2 gigs of ram(if i am right with the guess) Mine is eating 1 gigs of ram over 2 gigs available. The logic behind this is to preload some frequently used applications so that they will open faster
I guess that ayende didn't reserve so much memory for server 2008(which has, in my opinion, same features as vista) s
I too installed Windows Server 2008 which I use for development and for routing at home.
Problems I spotted already:
Networking takes ages to kick in after boot up, Windows Server 2003 was available much faster than 2008 (I'm running a E6600 + 2GB ram)
Either DNS or Routing services are not as robust as with WS2003, after one or two days of downloading content with BitTorrent clients wouldn't be able to connect to the internet
Very confusing firewall configuration when used in combination with routing services, not sure how to set firewall settings for a specific adapter only (the one connecting to the router/internet)
I think I will add another 2 GB ram, that's so cheap these days.
Now is time for some development ;)
