Communication Flaws
There is a guy that is sitting right next to me, and he just IMed me to ask a question. And right this minute another guy that is sitting three meters behind me IMed me about where I go to lunch.
Both got the same response "talk to me" as in the old fashion manner of using muscles and cords to produce movement in the air that would hit a drum located at the side of my head, thereby producing electrical charges that would be translated to their meaning by my brain.
I know it is old fashion, but there is electricity, even if very small amount in the process, so the High Tech Rules Of Communication are okay with that.

Depending on how crowded your workplace is, at some point you become happy some people use IM instead of talking :-)
That has happened to me too. My guess is that you look busy and they don't want to disturb you (too much). You can ignore someone on IM, and handle it when you get the time. Its harder to pretend you don't hear someone if they are standing next to you :)
I happen to enjoy using IM with people near me in the office, especially if it is for something quick.
I work with headphones, so stopping what I am doing only to answer "Whats for lunch" would kinda tick me off.
Rather than getting cut off, when I see an IM I simply finish my thought on whatever I am working on, then look at the window.
If it requires a conversation, then I have one, otherwise IM is great.
