Tiddly Wiki as a knowledge repository
I found out about TiddlyWiki, a truly astounding effort to create a Wiki in html, without needing a server or a database. I started playing with one, and it get obvious that this open up some interesting options.
- This is the first Wiki that I used that was real time, not near, not close, but real time. It's like you've a rich client application responding to you. It's so much better to edit the Wiki when you don't have to wait that it's a huge plus on its own.
- The nature of the Wiki allows for very rapid linking and building data, meaning that you can express your thoughts clearly. What is unique about this Wiki is that you can take it with you as you go along, no special software needed, just a web browser, and you're good to go.
- It's just a file, you can store it in the source repository, this allows you to both keep past versions of the Wiki (which, unlike other Wikis, this one don't provide) and syncronize easily between code and documentation.
I'm currently using it to document the process of building NHibernate Query Analyzer, it's working surpisingly well. I document all the bugs that I find in a test run and log thoughts and ideas about what to do next.
The wiki call itself "a reusable non-linear personal web notebook", and it really lives up to it's promise.
